CT-EW1: fixes for high-gain scenario have been implemented |

As turned out during the Seismometer Calibration Workshop (September 2005) there are some high-gain setups (both for broadband and short-period sensors) that can not take the amount of tilt and/or step velocity that the "native" CT-EW1 table produces. Consequently, we implemented two different remedies for this situation. A separate T-shaped extension bridge can be used to divide the amount of tilt by 2, 4, 8, or 16. According to Prof. Wielandt's calculations, using 1/16 of the original tilt should work with even the highest sensitivity versions of STS-2 and CMG-3 seismometers. For short-period seismometers it was found that vertical velocity could be a problem, especially in combination with hefty preamplifiers in the signal path. For the GERESS setup with high-gain S-13's and a factor 30 preamplifier in front of the digitizer proper, the native step velocity in low gear was too high but not by a great deal. A simple "damping plug" can be connected in between the remote control box and the CT-EW1 table, reducing motor voltage by about a factor of two. Bingo - half speed, no more problems.

LE-3D/5s: Still in good shape after 15 years on the road! |

2005-09-14: One of the first LE-3D/5s seismometers ever built arrives via airfreight from the IPG in Paris. The instrument has been hit by lightning and needs an overhaul. This particular seismometer has been delivered to the customer in late 1990 and has seen a lot of the world in the past fifteen years. When we opened the instrument we were pleasantly surprised to find no trace of humidity or dirt inside. While the housing looks a bit battered and could certainly use a paint job, the lid, connector, and the various gaskets have done a great job protecting the internal electronics and sensors from the environment. |
